Following the miscarriage of his second child with wife Mara Lane, it appears that Jonathan Rhys Meyers has turned to alcohol to, as Mara says, “cope with the sadness of this news”.

Taking to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news of the loss of their second child, Mara revealed that the couple’s miscarriage had perhaps been instrumental in recovering-alcoholic Jonathan’s relapse.

“With much sadness, we open our hearts to share that J and I lost our second child, who was baking in the oven,’ she wrote on the Instagram post, which featured a picture of a small girl and a lion.

“Child was very very much wanted (right now especially by J, so he took the news particularly not so well) and we are still working with coping skills over here… when life throws us curve balls such as these.

She then went on to detail the Irish actor’s history of alcoholism and depression, stating that he is the “strongest” person she knows.

“Depression is a real concern from past abuse as well as alcoholism which he was born with. He has been able to turn any ugliness and hurt in his life into art and is the strongest person I know.”

“I do not know anyone who has been through what he has been through and reached his level of successes.”

Mara, who is the mother to the pair’s first child, Wolf, born mid-last year, then confirmed that Jonathon is now seeking the help of a “sober living companion” to help him through this difficult time.

“He is safe and with his sober living companion and bodyguard to get into a detox closer to home since he was denied hospital help twice in Ireland because of an already two month wait period.”

Mara’s post comes just one day after Jonathon was stopped from boarding a flight to Vancouver, Canada at Dublin Airport last Friday because, as reported by The Daily Mail, he was to intoxicated to board the flight.

This isn’t the first time Jonathon has suffered from alcohol-related troubles; on and off since 2011, the Bend It Like Beckham actor has sought out help to face and overcome his demons.

Back in 2015, the 40-year-old was seen walking in a London street drinking vodka straight from the bottle.

He later released a statement, apologising for his relapse, stating:

“Mara and I are thankful for your support and kindness during this time. I apologise for having a minor relapse and hope that people don’t think too badly of me.”

“I stopped drinking immediately and it is no reflection on Damascus Cover as I was not meant to attend Cannes this year and I apologise to fans and colleagues.”

He continued: “I am on the mend and thank well wishers and sorry for my disheveled appearance as I was on my way home from a friends and had not changed I feel I made a mistake and feel quite embarrassed but this was just a blip in my recovery otherwise I’m living a healthy life. Love and blessings. #Rebel #Angel.”

Our thoughts are with both Jonathan and Mara during this period.
