Johnny Depp tapped into Captain Jack Sparrow’s softer side on Tuesday when he visited sick kids at the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, Queensland.
Dressed in his full swashbuckling garb 52-year-old Depp took some time out of filming the latest instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean film on the Gold Coast to make a secret impromptu visit to some young fans in the children’s ward at the hospital.
Seven-year-old Max Bennett, who suffers from transverse myelitis, a rare neurological disorder affecting the spinal cord which had him in an induced coma just weeks ago, was one lucky fan who got to meet the Hollywood star.
Max’s mother Rachel told the ABC that Depp arrived via black helicopter and went to bedsides, joking and playing with the kids all the while hamming it up in his full pirate persona.
“He was going from room to room seeing all the kids who couldn’t get out of bed,” Ms Bennett told the ABC.
“We waited out of the front of one of the rooms, and he came up to us and had a really good chat to Max.”
Captain Jack posed for selfies and handed out gold coins and even did a playful interview for Juiced TV – a 30 minute show made by the kids being treated at Lady Cilento.
“It was really beautiful. Everyone kept on trying to move him on, but he kept on coming back,” added Ms Bennett.
Depp has been in Queensland since earlier this year filming Pirates of Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
