The 51-year-old actor wasn’t shooting at the time of his injury, however an insider revealed to TheWrap it was deemed serious enough to send the actor back home to the US for immediate surgery.

Despite Captain Jack Sparrow being the lead of the fifth instalment of the Pirates franchise, production will be “minimally impacted” without the actor for a few weeks.

Disney has confirmed the film release date will not change, and will still be released on July 7, 2017.

Reprising his role as the beloved Captain Jack Sparrow, Johnny is joined by Javier Bardem, whose wife Penelope Cruz appeared in the previous film. Other stars include Australian actors Brenton Thwaites and the return of Geoffrey Rush’s character Hector Barbossa.

The highly-anticipated Disney flick only began filming a month ago, right after Johnny married Amber Heard.

Johnny Depp and Amber sailed into married life by celebrating on his private island after the loved-up couple tied the knot in a civil ceremony in his LA just prior to coming to Australia.
