Amber, 30, reportedly filed her divorce petition on Monday, citing irreconcilable difference, TMZ reports.
The divorce comes just three days after Johnny’s mum passed away.
The couple’s romance has been overshadowed by their run-in with Australian authorities last year after Amber snuck her dogs Pistol and Boo into the country while Johnny, 52, was filming the latest instalment of Pirates of the Caribbean earlier this year.
This week Johnny took fire at Australian politician Barnaby Joyce over the dog-smuggling incident on popular US talk show Jimmy Kimmel.
When asked about his opinion of Barnaby Joyce, Depp replied: “He looks somehow inbred with a tomato.”
“It’s not a criticism. I was a little worried. He just might explode,” he said.
At the time Joyce argued Depp’s celebrity status should not hold him above the law.
Amber Heard was charged with illegally importing animals into the country, and producing a false document (her passenger arrival card, on which the dogs were not declared).
Johnny split from French actress Vanessa Paradis in 2012 after 14 years together.
They have two children together; Lily-Rose, 16 and Jack, 13.
