“It is with great sadness that my brother John and I announce the passing of our Mother Nancy Dow. She was 79 years old and passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends after enduring a long illness,” the 47-year-old explained to PEOPLE.

“We ask that our family’s privacy be respected as we grieve our loss,” she concluded.

According to various reports, the star’s mother had suffered from several strokes over the years and was unable to walk or talk.

In a devastating turn of events, In Touch Weekly claims the actress had reached out and visited her ill mother for the first time in five years on May 12.

“Jen must have had a wake-up call and wanted to see her mother one last time before she passes,” the source told the publication.

Nancy passed away “peacefully surrounded by family and friends.”

Last year, the Friends stunner told The Hollywood Reporter she had a complex relationship with her mother, who was also an actress.

“She was critical. She was very critical of me. Because she was a model, she was gorgeous, stunning. I wasn’t. I never was,” Jen shared.

“I honestly still don’t think of myself in that sort of light, which is fine. She was also very unforgiving. She would hold grudges that I just found so petty.”

In 1999, at the height of Jen’s fame, Nancy destroyed what remained of their relationship when she published an explosive tell-all memoir called From Mother And Daughter to Friends.

Following the actress’ divorce from Brad Pitt in 2005, Jen and Nancy managed to rebuild their bond however in recent years they had seen very little of each other.

Furthermore, Nancy wasn’t invited to her daughter’s marriage to Justin Theroux last year.
