Multiple sources have confirmed the sad news to Us Weekly, with insiders claiming the long-term-friends-turned-lovers decided to end their relationship after recently travelling to the Cannes Film Festival in the South of France.
The last public event the pair attended as a couple was the Vienna Life Ball in May.
According to the well placed pal, it was South African-born Charlize who decided to call it quits.
Despite no official confirmation, it was widely believed the Milk star proposed to the mother-of-one during a trip to Paris about a year into their relationship.
Meanwhile, in March Sean famously told Esquire UK that his past marriages to Madonna and Robin Wright were discounted in comparison to his bond with Charlize and that he wouldn’t rule out tying the knot a third time.
“You say I’ve been married twice before, but I’ve been married under circumstances where I was less informed than I am today,” the 54-year-old mused.
“So I wouldn’t even consider it a third marriage, I’d consider it a first marriage on its own terms if I got married again. I mean, I like the tradition. A friend of mine wrote a line, ‘Without tradition, new things die.’ And I don’t want new things to die.”
In April the feeling was mutual with 39-year-old Charlize, who adopted three-year-old son Jackson in 2012, telling the same publication how blessed she was to have Sean as a partner.
“I’m a very, very, very lucky girl. Very lucky. He’s hot. He is hot,” she explained.
