Isla Fisher covers UK men’s mag Square Mile’s new issue and in her cover interview she spills some seriously hilarious details about life as the wife of funnyman Sacha Baron Cohen.
The couple, who share two daughters and one son, have been together for 14 years and married for six, which surpasses the average Hollywood relationship duration by a long shot.
Perhaps permanent comic relief is the secret to their successful marriage, because life with Ali G sure sounds like a laugh a minute.
Recalling a visit from her parents, Isla told the mag:
“My dad and stepmum flew out to Cape Town, as they really wanted to see Sacha working, but I neglected to check the call sheet. I took them over to set and all I could see were two animatronic elephants surrounded by the film crew.
“We got closer, and we couldn’t see Sacha anywhere. Then suddenly my husband popped his head out of the elephant’s vagina and proceeded to fight against the other elephant’s erect penis. I saw my stepmum’s face – and my mouth was just opening and closing like a goldfish, but no words came out.”
And it seems Sacha’s characters are so ridiculous and commonplace that they’re not even a big deal in their household anymore.
“Once, Sacha came back from work while he was shooting Bruno and he had red welts and blood all over his back, and his thumb was broken. It was the result of a scene with a real six-foot-four dominatrix who had tried to force him to have sex with her. When I asked him what had happened, he just said it was a ‘workplace injury’.”
While filming the controversial Borat, which was banned in several countries, worries about Sacha getting arrested became more normal and blasé than household chores.
“Instead of asking: ‘Are you going to pick up the dry cleaning?’ I’d ask, ‘Are we getting sued by somebody?’ or ‘Is there a warrant out for your arrest?’”
Isla and Sacha wed in 2002 after a six-year engagement and her conversion to Judaism and have remained largely private, making rare insights into their life like this even more enjoyable.
