Australian actor Hugh Sheridan has announced their split from fiancé, Kurt Roberts, via a sweet birthday tribute on Instagram.
Explaining that it wouldn’t have felt right to not wish Kurt a happy birthday, Hugh wrote a long tribute where he detailed his gratitude for Kurt throughout a difficult year, and explained that they were no longer together.
“In retrospect, having a first public relationship, that public, that fast, might’ve been too much pressure on us,” they wrote in the post.
“Maybe it was COVID or quarantines or us working too hard (I take the blame for full responsibility for the working hours), maybe it’s dad’s death or all the above,” they noted.
“The point is Kurt is incredibly kind, someone who is earnestly caring and helped me through a very tough time.”
Hugh and Kurt were together for just over a year, and engaged for three months, with Hugh apparently proposing while the pair were just hanging out on the couch at home.
It occurred amid a dark time for Hugh, which they detailed in the post as well.
“As you know, a year ago I came out as a human, two weeks later got cancelled, then in the darkness found light in Kurt,” the Packed to the Rafters actor wrote.
“Kurt is incredibly kind, someone who is earnestly caring and helped me through a very tough time.”
Hugh came out as non-binary in June this year when they appeared on the cover of DNA magazine.
“I AM still a human (non-binary/bi/me/Hughman) but I’m in a monogamous relationship with another human, who I love,” they wrote alongside an image of the cover, which also featured Kurt.
“I don’t accept a label because it limits me… if you want it; take it. I chose zero labels for no other reason except the exclusion, limitations, separation,” they added at the time.
“Be you. Be true. Be free: to BE, to JUST BE… you, a human, same as me,” they wrapped it up.
Hugh hinted that this might not be the complete end for their relationship with Kurt at the end of his post.
“For now, we didn’t make it, but we tried very, very hard, I’m so sorry for us that it wasn’t easy and I’m sorry for the added pressure,” they shared.
“Lots learned, the heartache is heavy, but zero regrets for the greatest love.
“Bless you dear Kurt you beautiful human and thank God for birthday today, without you I wouldn’t be.”
