The 46-year-old Hollywood hunk took to Instagram this week to give a very special shout out to his dad, Christopher Jackman.

Hugh shares a close bond with his dad – Christopher raised Hugh and his siblings as a single parent after Hugh’s mother returned to live in her native England when Hugh was just eight years old.

In 2012 an emotional Hugh told 60 minutes that his father was his “rock”.

“My father is my rock. It’s where I learned everything about loyalty, dependability, being there day in, day out, no matter what,” Hugh said.

“It’s always about the family,” Hugh added.

The actor suspected his father blamed himself for his parents split, and thinks that is why he always tells Hugh to put wife Deborra-Lee Furness and their kids Oscar and Ava first.

“It’s always, ‘How’s Deb?’ It’s not about work,” Hugh said. “And I think that’s him living with probably some of his regrets… He doesn’t want me to make me that mistake. In his gentle way, he always reminds me [family is] the most important thing.”

Although he has an excellent relationship with his mother now, he admitted some parts of his childhood were hard.

“At the time, it was difficult,” Hugh told The Weekly in 2012. “One of the main things I remember is that horrible feeling that people were talking about you and looking at you because it was odd for the mother to leave.

“For many years, I thought it was not going to be forever, so I clung on to that. Up until about the age of 12 or 13, I thought Mum and Dad would get back together.

“Finally realising it wasn’t going to happen was probably the toughest time to be honest.”

Earlier this year in a TV interview Hugh and Deborra-Lee offered some advice on how they have managed to keep their 20-year marriage strong.

“Deb had a rule, never apart for more than two weeks,” Hugh told Today, adding that in the early days of their relationship he said “yes” to everything she wanted.

“And we have never been apart for more than two weeks,” Hugh said proudly.
