If you think that stars wake up red carpet ready, you may be surprised to hear exactly what is involved with getting ready for a prestigious awards ceremony such as The Golden Globes.
A mere mortal might get a blow dry and a Shellac manicure for a special event, but the preparations for the A-list crowd can take thousands of dollars and the better part of a month, according to news.com.
It all begins with a stylist to help you choose your outfit.
“There’s a lot of prep involved — we’re talking weeks!” says stylist Micaela Erlanger, who is dressing Lupita Nyong’o for this year’s Globes. “From talking to designers if you’re doing something custom to getting the samples in and, of course, fittings — it’s crazy.”
Her day rate is around $2151, and for a big ceremony she’ll work several days.
A couture gown’s cost is only limited by the imagination, but Amy Adams’ “loaner” for last year’s award where she picked up Best Actress for “Big Eyes” was a $17,928 Versace number that she daren’t sweat in.
A celebrity hairstylist doesn’t just whip out an idea on the day, but begins prepping a few days in advance tells Adir Abergel, who has coiffed Natalie Portman and Reese Witherspoon for awards nights.
“I look at the dress — the lines, the construction, the texture.” Then he finds inspiration and presents concepts to his clients before finalising the look.
The hair on the day take two to five hours, and at a day rate of $2868, plus a few days of prep, we’re witnessing a $8605 hair do – the cost of a good second hand car on your head.
Makeup artists plan a look and depending on exclusivity and make-up trial demands can cost anywhere from $2k to $7k, but when you’re in a room with some of the most beautiful people in the world, it’s totally worth the cost for a perfectly even eyeliner, and mascara that won’t run if you cry due to the sheer emotions of the day.
A $25 manicure from the local shopping centre will not do for the Globes, so a house-call from celebrity manicurist Tom Bachik will cost around $430, even when it’s mate rates for Beyonce or Jennifer Anniston.
When it comes to bling, for Amy Adams’ big night she was loaned $760,000 worth of Tiffany & Co jewellery , but there are hidden costs in keeping that dazzling bounty safe with security teams needing to travel the jewels.
“Armoured trucks, guards and insurance are all part of the process,” says Forevermark Diamond expert, Kristen Trustey. And brands usually need to hire security teams not once but twice.
“Once a stylist has made their selections, we typically bring the jewellery to a fitting with the celebrity.”
Stone Security Services regularly works red carpets, and the company estimates that all this could easily run a jewellery brand at least $28,686.
Tallying up your big night and you’re looking at over $57,000 before you pay for your Uber home.
