Dame Helen Mirren, one of Hollywood’s most successful and admired actresses, has revealed that she feels like she missed her chance to play 007 in the iconic James Bond franchise.
The 72-year-old may have an Oscar, four Emmys, three Golden Globes and a Tony award under her belt, but time was not on her side when it came to playing James Bond.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Dame Helen said that she felt too old for the role and echoed Halle Berry’s comments that James Bond should not be played by a woman at all.
‘In my youth, that would have been great of course. But that time was different; we could never even have imagined a woman playing that role,’ Helen told the publication.
Halle Berry has said this week that she does not think there should be a female James Bond.
“I want [women] to be tough but I don’t know if Bond should be a woman,” Halle said speaking with ETearlier this week.
“I mean, that series is steeped in history, you know Ian Fleming’s stories. I don’t think you can change Bond to a woman.”
“We can create a new Bond character that’s a woman, and give her a new name, based on that theory, but I don’t know if Bond should be a woman,” she finished.
With an increasing amount of pressure on studios to incorporate more diverse casting into the franchise, a list of possible James Bond actresses is slowly emerging.
Including Charlize Theron and Kate Beckinsale.
