Nearly every Hollywood divorce comes with a statement promising to put the children first, but most couples can’t resist a public slagging match that hurts their kids far more than their former partner.
Heidi Klum and Seal seemed destined to tread this familiar path this week, when the singer accused his estranged wife of infidelity, but Heidi took the high road, refusing to be dragged into a public squabble.
Instead, the 39-year-old supermodel released a statement that paid tribute to her seven-year marriage and reaffirmed her commitment to her children Leni, eight, Henry, six, Johan, five, and two-year-old Lou.
“I cherish all of the great memories Seal and I created together over the years,” Heidi said in a statement to People magazine.
“Our separation was based on issues between the two of us. Seal has moved on and so have I. My priority has and continues to be protecting and providing for our children.”
Heidi’s statement came one day after Seal, 49, commented about her alleged relationship with her bodyguard, who was photographed embracing Heidi while on holiday in Sardinia.
“I wish she had shown a little more class and had at least waited until we had separated before she started fornicating with the help,” he told gossip website TMZ.
Seal later stepped back from the comments, claiming he wasn’t implying Heidi had been unfaithful.
The public attack comes as a surprise as Heidi and Seal had previously insisted their split was “amicable”.
They are believed to be privately arguing over the details of their divorce. Heidi has reportedly applied for primary custody of the children, while Seal wants shared custody. There is also said to be disagreement about the division of shared assets.
