TMZ has revealed that the pair cited irreconcilable differences on their paperwork after a source explained that, “they have a personality difference.”
“It is with a heavy heart that we have come to the decision to divorce. We move forward with love and respect for one another and the shared focus for what is best for our son,” Halle and Olivier said in a joint statement.
“We wish each other nothing but happiness in life, and we hope that you respect our, and most importantly our children’s privacy, as we go through this difficult period,” they added.
The website also reported that the couple’s separation came to a-head last week when the 49-year-old Frenchman was filmed hitting and knocking over an airport employee with his son’s car seat.
In the footage, Halle is visibly shocked as she walks with her two kids behind her husband.
Sources explained to TMZ that the Oscar winner was fuming over the incident, especially since Olivier is now being sued over of the matter.
It’s not the first time the actor has showed off his violent streak. In 2012, Olivier and Halle’s former partner Gabriel Aubry came to blows in a nasty brawl, which left Gabriel battered and bruised. However Olivier claims he was simply acting out of self-defense and Gabriel instigated the biff. The pair both ended up taking restraining orders out against each other.
“They’re just very, very different people. He’s a very macho guy, and things just didn’t jive,” the insider added.
The duo met in 2010 on the set of Dark Tide before a very pregnant Halle tied the knot to Olivier in his native France.
This marks the end of the Monster’s Ball star’s third marriage – she is also still locked in battle with her ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry over the custody of their seven-year-old daughter Nahla Ariela.
It is understood that that this time around Halle wants to share custody of her and Olivier’s two-year-old son Maceo-Robert.
