Gwyneth Paltrow has opened up about her past relationships with Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck and why she thinks it didn’t work.
Speaking to US radio jock Howard Stern on his SiriusXM radio show, Gwyneth, 42, recalled the three years she spent with former-fiancé Brad Pitt in the mid-90s after first meeting him on the set of thriller Seven.
“I definitely fell in love with him,” Gwyneth recalled.
“He was so gorgeous and sweet. I mean, he was Brad Pitt!”
While Brad is now 51 and married to Angelina Jolie with six kids, Gwyneth’s dad for one, mourned his absence.
“My father was devastated,” Gwyneth said of her 1997 split with Brad. Her late movie-director father Bruce apparently saw Brad as a son.
“I was such a kid, I was 22 when we met. It’s taken me until 40 to get my head out of my ass. You can’t make that decision when you’re 22 years old… I wasn’t ready, and he was too good for me.”
“I didn’t know what I was doing.”
Despite their painful break-up, Gwyneth said that she and Brad are still amicable. “If I see him, we’re friendly,” Gwyneth told Howard. “I don’t hang out with him.”
She also confessed to still keeping a few old memories in the form of flashback photos: “I have a couple somewhere. I think every piece of your life is an important piece of your life!”
As for the A-list actor that followed after – Ben Affleck, now 42 and also married with kids, saying: “He was not in a good place in his life to have a girlfriend.”
She also said that unlike charming Brad, Gwyneth’s parents were not too approving of Ben: “I think they appreciated how he’s super intelligent and he’s really talented and funny. They loved him, but they were okay with us not being together.”
Reflecting back on all her past relationships with ridiculously good-looking men, Gwyneth said: “I think that when you’re in your twenties, you can get swept up in [good looks}. “When you’re a kid, you tend to be more shallow and you’re also immature, so you think that being with a good looking person validates yourself in some kind of way. It’s not true.”
