Gwyneth Paltrow has broken down in court, claiming she fears for her family’s safety after years of stalking.
During the trial of the man who is accused of stalking her, the Oscar-winning actress crumbled as she shared terrifying details of notes sent to her family home discussing details about her death as well as some pornographic pictures.
Dante Soiu, 66, was reportedly stalking Gwyn for 17 years. The trial discussed around 66 messages sent over a six-year period – between 2009 and 2015 – when her children were just babies.
It was also revealed notes and gifts were sent to her home with the packages including references to her death, items of clothing, a pair of earrings, a note from the stalker expressing his desire to marry her, religious books, and oddly, a Weight Watchers cookbook.
She broke down during her two-and-a-half hours on the stand after a prosecutor asked her about whether she feared for her children’s safety.
“Yes,” she responded.
“I’m scared because the communications completely defy logic,” she said. “I’ve been dealing with this for 17 years with the communications from this man.”
“This is a case that has gone on for Ms Paltrow for 17 years,” Deputy District Attorney Wendy Segall said during opening statements. “Her sense of security has been shattered by this man.”
He has pleaded not guilty and shook his head during portions of the opening statements.
Previously, in 2000, Soiu was found not guilty by reason of insanity in a previous trial involving messages he sent to Paltrow, which included pornography and sex toys, SMH reports.
He was sent to a mental institution for several years, but re-arrested last year after sending the actress new correspondence.
