The couple reveal their joy in our exclusive interview.
No-one could accuse Grant Hackett of doing things by halves. Famous for winning gold in the 1500m freestyle at two successive Olympic Games, the retired swim star is now taking a double dive into parenthood.
An ecstatic Grant and his pop singer wife Candice Alley now reveal for the first time that they’re expecting twins.
For the much-loved champion, currently forging a successful career as a TV presenter on the Nine Network, the discovery that he’s going to be a father to not one but two bundles of joy has easily eclipsed all of his triumphs in the pool.
“There’s no comparison,” Grant says. “I worked so hard for those things and, of course, they mean the absolute world to me, but this is your own — it’s your children. It’s just unbelievable.”
Candice agrees. “We feel so lucky. It’s a dream come true.”
Grant, 28, was by his partner’s side when a home pregnancy test taken at their inner Melbourne apartment confirmed they were to be parents. The couple were so thrilled they hadn’t even contemplated Candice, 26, could be carrying two babies.
“I went off to the first doctor’s appointment a couple of weeks later by myself, because I didn’t know that I’d be having an ultrasound then,” Candice says. “I was incredulous. When I saw the screen, I heard the doctor say, ‘There’s the baby,’ before he then said, ‘And there’s the other one!'”
