Grace of Monaco canned from Cannes?

The Weinstein Company has threatened to pull distribution on the Grace Kelly biopic two weeks before the films French premiere.

The biopic – which stars Nicole Kidman as Princess Grace – has been caught in a well-publicised stalemate between the film’s French director, Olivier Dahan and Weinstein over edits of the film.

According to Variety, Harvey Weinstein is said to still be unhappy with the version of the film that the Cannes jury selected to open the festival on May 14.

While Dahan says the film is complete, Weinstein is said to be lobbying for more reshoots to expand on Grace Kelly’s life in Hollywood and further scenes to expand on the political situation in Monaco during the early years of her marriage to Prince Rainier III (played by Tim Roth).

In October, Dahan went public with the infighting that surrounded the film, telling French newspaper Liberation that he was going to stand up to the US movie giant and fight for his version of the film which was originally scheduled for a November 2013 theatrical release.

“It’s right to struggle, but when you confront an American distributor like Weinstein, not to name names, there is not much you can do,” Dahan said. “Either you say ‘Go figure it out with your pile of shit’ or you brace yourself so the blackmail isn’t as violent.”

While the Weinstein Co. has made no official comment, Variety reports it omitted Grace of Monaco from a recent press release sent to journalists outlining its Cannes contenders.
