More than cheesecake was shared between the Golden Girls stars! In fact, Betty White recently dished that she and her late co-stars โ Rue McClanahan, Estelle Getty and Bea Arthur โ not only swapped gossip while on-set but also ended up helping each other through both tears and tragedies during the seriesโ seven seasons.
โWe adored each other,โ Betty, now 95, once said. โIt was such a special experience. Between scenes, instead of going to our dressing rooms, weโd sit there and yak about very intimate things.โ

Tragedy first struck in the showโs first season when both Bea and Bettyโs mothers passed away. It was a mutual loss that bonded the two for years to come. โMy father had died a number of years before I did Maude, so [my mom] was living independently,โ Bea said.
Still grief-stricken by the loss of her father, Beaโs mother โwas totally blind and almost totally deafโ by the time she began filming Golden Girls.
โIt was a pretty rough year,โ the Emmy Award-winning actress recalled. In fact, it was so rough โ between the grief that both Bea and Betty experienced โ that it was at one point called into question whether or not the show should continue.
โWe were ready to shut down the show for as long as they needed,โ director Lex Passaris exclusively told Closer Weekly. โBut both ladies said, โNo. We need to work.'โ
Despite rumors circulating that Bettyโs cheeriness rubbed Bea the wrong way โ much like the personalities of their respective on-screen characters Rose and Dorothy โ the truth is, the duo was tight.
โBea wouldnโt go to dinner between shows unless Betty would walk with her,โ Rue once recalled. Echoing her sentiment, Arthurโs son, Matthew Saks, told Closer, โBetty would pick my mum up in the driveway, or my mum would pick her up.โ
As Bea once described, โIt was a love affair between all of us.โ The actresses truly supported each other, both on-screen and off, in both real-life and in fictional situations.
Before filming of The Golden Girls began, Betty suffered another loss: the death of her husband Allen Ludden. Lex revealed that he still remembers the moment in which, while filming the episode โThe Heart Attack,โ Bettyโs voice cracked, an obvious clue that she had been pulling emotions from her real-life loss of her husband.
โEveryone thinks Estelleโs character, Sophia, is dying, so it was particularly poignant,โ Lex said.
โRose tells a story about her husband Charlieโs death, and Bettyโs basically talking about Allen. Bettyโs voice kind of cracked and she took a breath and said to me, โIโd give anything to have that year of my life back again.'โ

Bea and Betty werenโt the only cast members to support and rely on each other. Betty once remembered how good of a friend Rue was to her. โShe was everything as far as a friend is concerned,โ Betty recalled.
When filming of Season 1 began, Rue was also enduring a difficult time โ the demise of her fifth marriage. โThey confided in each other,โ a source told Closer. โRue was a great listener and a sympathetic shoulder. She had a sounding board in Betty as well.โ
Estelle โ famous for her sassy portrayal of Sophia โ also experienced hardships, as she struggled with crippling anxiety attacks related to performances. โShe had an awful time remembering her lines because she would freeze and panic,โ Rue once dished.
โThe day before tape day, you could see a big difference in her. Sheโd be walking around like Pig-Pen under a black cloud. By tape day, she was unreachable.โ
To this day, Betty still feels terrible about the amount of stress Estelle endured. โYou thought, โSheโs never going to be able to take a step on that stage.โ Sheโs one of the reasons for the success of the show with young people. They get such a kick out of little Estelle telling big Bea off!โ
Though itโs been a whopping 25 years since Betty and her gal pals went off the air, The Golden Girls will always hold a special place in this actressโ heart.
โIโve missed Golden Girls since we went off the air,โ she has said. โIt was just heaven. It was like being with your family every day.โ
