“It’s really hurtful,” Giuliana says of the attention that her weight receives.
“I’m sorry that some people think I’m disgustingly skinny, as they put it, but there’s nothing I can do.”
Giuliana also revealed that her surrogate miscarried on New Year’s Eve with her last viable embryo.
“It was painful. We were so optimistic with this last embryo. We thought, ‘This is definitely going to work. This is our last shot.'”
Giuliana and her husband Bill have one child together so far – 2-and-a half-year-old Duke, their ‘miracle baby’, who was also conceived via surrogate.
The E! News presenter froze four of her eggs after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and underwent a double mastectomy that year. Duke was successfully conceived with one of those embryos, but now the last has been lost.
Giuliana, 40, insists that she is now healthy but understandably, the cancer-suppressing medication that she’s been taking since 2012 has had an effect on her body.
“Some people were saying, ‘The cancer is probably back,’ ” Guiliana told People magazine.
“And they were accusing me of every eating disorder. I thought to myself, ‘God, if someone really thought I had an eating disorder, what a horrible way to approach it.’ “
The stylish star, says that she hopes attitudes will change now that she is opening up about it and sharing her story in her memoir, Going Off Script, due out in April.
Giuliana does admit though that she understands why she garners so much attention for her frame, and wishes she weren’t so thin. “I look in the mirror and it’s hard for me,” she admits.
“I am really thin. I want to look fit and beautiful and sexy, and I can’t.”
“I never want my weight to distract people from what I do,” she says. “But it is becoming a distraction, [whenever] I wear something sleeveless, show my arms, my back.”
The Fashion Police presenter says though that it is just her body, and that the cancer medication makes it hard for her to gain any weight. “I started noticing that I was eating a lot, but not gaining weight at all. I was concerned.”
“I eat more than any of my friends,” she says. “I eat a very robust, healthy, balanced diet and dessert almost every night. I’m not hiding from anything.”
Giuliana says that she was even scheduled to do a feature with a major publication but that they backed out, calling her “too skinny”.
“That was really hurtful,” Giuliana says. “I thought, ‘Wow, I’m on cancer medication. I’m doing the best that I can.”
For Giuliana though, she is staying positive and is grateful for all that her body does for her, saying: “I’m lucky that I even have the type of cancer that reacts to the medicine.”
“I refuse to be broken [by what people say],” she says. “I have so many beautiful things in my life.”
As to the possibility of having more children via adoption, Giuliana says she isn’t ruling anything out.
“We’re open to everything,” she says. “I think adoption is a beautiful gift you’re giving each other. And it’s funny, I’m even more open to adoption than I was before. Because I think to myself, ‘I love Duke so much, if I couldn’t take care of him, I hope there would be someone else who would love him.'”
