Their bromance is one of the best known in Hollywood but news of Brad Pitt’s marriage breakdown was news to George Clooney today when a reporter asked him about his reaction.
Clooney was in New York at the UN General Assembly when a reporter from CNN asked him if he’d like to comment on Angelina’s decision to file for divorce.
“All right, don’t shoot me on this last question. It’s a big story, you’re friends with both of them. Your thoughts, any thoughts?” asked a CNN reporter asked George, who immediately appeared puzzled.
“What’s that?” asked Clooney.
“On Angelina and Brad,” said the reporter.
“Oh, what, what happened?”
“Divorce. She filed.”
“I didn’t know that. That’s. Wow. I feel very sorry, then,” said Clooney awkwardly.
“They’re … that’s a sad story, then. That’s unfortunate for a family … That’s an unfortunate story about a family. I feel very sorry to hear that. It’s the first I’ve heard of it.”
Angelina Jolie filed legal documents on Monday, citing “irreconcilable differences”.
The couple, who have been together for 12 years, married for 2, officially separated on September 15.
After gossip site TMZ speculated a split was imminent Angelina’s lawyers confirmed the split.
In a statement, Jolie’s camp focused on the children.
“Angelina will always do what’s in the best interest to protect her children,” Geyer Kosinski, Jolie’s manager, told E! News in a statement Tuesday. “She appreciates everyone’s understanding of their need for privacy at this time.”
Brad Pitt has also released a statement about the divorce. In a statement to PEOPLE magazine he said:
“I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time.”
