George buys Amal a Downton-style British countryside manor

Newlywed George Clooney has splashed out on a lavish English country mansion for his new bride Amal – right near the real-life Downton Abbey.

George and Amal are reported to be holidaying in the UK, christening the brand new multimillion-dollar residence by spending their honeymoon there.

Amal, 36, is often based in London for her work as a barrister, so it comes as no surprise that the A-list couple are looking to lay down roots there.

The country estate is less than 80km from Amal’s legal chambers in central London and it was reportedly the glamorous human rights lawyer who chose the Oxfordshire location.

A source told The Mail, “It was Amal who first set eyes on the place. It’s her dream location.”

“She was torn between Oxfordshire and Kent but ultimately chose Oxfordshire because she felt most at home there. She first fell in love with it during her days there at university.”

The new location is also near Highclere Castle (pictured, top), better known as the real-life Downton Abbey, where the TV show is filmed.

George, 53, recently filmed scenes for the British costume drama of which he’s a huge fan. He got involved thanks to the show’s star Hugh Bonneville, who he became good pals with after starring in The Monuments Men together. George is also said to have made quite an impression on Dame Maggie Smith while he was on set.

Purchasing real estate in foreign countries is nothing new for George, who is already something of a property tycoon with a portfolio of homes around the world. His main home, in LA, is a 683-square-metre compound – and he often bases himself in Italy, where he owns an extravagant villa at Lake Como.

George also owns a residence in Los Cabos, Mexico, right next door to his pals Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber – who were among the celebrities most prominently featured at his and Amal’s Venice wedding.

Their new British love nest is said to be quite a regal estate, boasting state-of-the-art facilities, including an entire spa complex and private cinema.

There are also two cottages in the property’s sprawling grounds – perfect for when Hollywood pals drop by!
