George Clooney and wife Amal have spent the months after the birth of their twins, Alexander and Ella, tucked away at their villa in Lake Como.
Of course, there have been a few pictures here and there — still nothing of the world’s most famous twins, though — and a handful throwaway comments. But now, the couple, who wed in 2014, have opened their doors to the public by way of a very revealing interview.
Here’s what they had to say…
On finding love later in life…
“Every single day of my life, I just feel lucky,” the Money Monster actor tells The Hollywood Reporter in a lengthy profile titled ‘At Home With George Clooney in Italy.’ “Lucky in my career. Lucky enough to have found the perfect partner. Sometimes in life it doesn’t happen on your schedule, but you find the person that you were always supposed to be with. That’s how I feel, and I know that’s how Amal feels.”
On the inspiring reason why they decided to start a family…
“It had never been part of my DNA,” George says of parenting. “We didn’t plan on it. We never talked about it until after we were married, which is funny. There was an assumption that we didn’t want them. And then, after the wedding, Amal and I were talking and we just felt we’d gotten very lucky, both of us, and we should share whatever good luck we’ve got. It would seem self-centered to just have that belong to us.”
On the moment they discovered not one but two (!!) babies were on the way…
“[The doctor] goes, ‘Well, there’s one,’” George, 56, says of the ultrasound. “And I said, ‘Great.’ And then he goes, ‘And there’s the second one.’ And I was like, ‘What?’ We just sat there, staring at that piece of paper they give you, and I kept thinking there was a mistake.”
On the way parenthood has changed their lives…
“Now my house is filled with the warm sounds of babies crying,” George tells the publication. “You should see when my friends show up and see me change a diaper, the laughter that comes from them. I go, ‘I know, I know.’ I’ve given them so much shit for so many years, I deserve every bit of it.”
“We are unrested—we’re both unrested, and she’s more unrested than me, obviously,” he later adds. “But I’m a very good diaper guy, which I didn’t know I would be.”

And the possibility of expanding their brood…
“I’m 39,” Amal tells the magazine, shaking her head to a question about more children. “I already had them quite late.”
On what surprises Amal most about her husband…
“What a great father he is.”
On the magical (and somewhat awkward) way they became engaged…
“I’m the cook in the family,” George says with a smile. “Believe me, Amal makes reservations. I did pasta of some form, not that impressive. And then over champagne, after dinner, I told her there was a lighter to light the candle in the drawer, and she reached back and pulled out a ring. And I did all the stuff, got down on my knee and did all the things you’re supposed to do.”
“She just kept staring at the ring, going, ‘Oh, my God,’” the Suburbicon director adds. “It was 20 minutes of me on my knee, waiting for her to say yes, because she was so shocked.”
George also opened up about his extravagant wedding in 2014.
The actor-director said their wedding became “an event” once people got wind of their plans.
And their beyond extravagant wedding…
“Oh, my God! Once people got wind of it, it became an event,” the actor says. “We took a bus from here to Venice, then we got on a boat, and once we got on the boat, there were so many paparazzi and so many people standing there waiting. We were sitting down in the boat, and I was like, ‘You know what? Why are we hiding? Why are we ducking? We shouldn’t be ashamed of this.’ And we got up and waved.”
The rest, as they say, is history… literally.
