The wife of former swimming champion Geoff Huegill, has been arrested for allegedly stealing a pair of designer leather pants worth $2,500 from a Byron Bay Boutique, Island Luxe. Sara Huegill, 34, allegedly stuffed the pair of pants by designer brand Bassike, in her handbag before exiting the store without paying on Sunday, the Daily Telegraph reported.
A staff member of Island Luxe chased the publicist and mum-of-two down the street, flagging two police officers who arrested her. She was taken to Byron Bay police station, where police say she declined to be formally interviewed and was fingerprinted before being charged with shoplifting.
The leather pants were recovered and returned to the store. At the time Sara’s two young children were with husband Geoff, who is now a swimming coach, at nearby Main Beach.
Sara’s lawyers suggested in a statement that her mental health issues may have contributed to the incident.
“Sara deeply regrets the incident and apologises unreservedly,” they said.
“Sara has made good progress recently in being treated for issues related to anxiety and depression and acknowledges this is a setback.”
“She has asked for privacy and understanding for her family at this time.”
Sara, a former employee of PR mogul Roxy Jacencko, will face Byron Bay local court on June 7.
