“I realise that this has caused some commotion,” he told reporters outside his home this afternoon.

“Some people feel that they have been let down and I deeply apologise for that.

“But I would ask everyone to understand that [as] this matter is before the courts I won’t be making any more other statements until the matter has been resolved. Thank you very much and we will speak to you again soon.”

The comments came after Geoff and his wife Sara were arrested and charged with drug possession at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney on Saturday.

The drug scandal has since seen the father of two suspended as an ambassador for AustSwim.

“He is very upset and remorseful. He is very, very sad this has happened… He is a decent man,” said AustSwim CEO Gordon Mallett.

“We have suspended him while the process takes place. It’s to allow natural justice to take place.

“He has had his foibles but he has never tried to cover anything up. He has had a big impact on people in educating them about the importance of water safety and watching kids and making people safer in and around water.

“Anything that impairs anyone perception of what’s going on around them — particularly in a water environment — is not good.”

The pair was escorted from the Moet & Chandon lounge after allegedly locking themselves in a disabled toilet before being found in possession of a small quantity of cocaine.

Both were given a field court attendance notice and will appear in court on May 14.
