You will need: fingerpaint (homemade recipe), 1 to 3 colours in bowls with large spoon laminated tabletop grout scrapers (from hardware store) plastic combs apron Step 1 Put on apron. Step 2 Spoon the fingerpaint onto the tabletop. Spread paint with hands to mix colours and enjoy the sensory experience. Draw patterns and pictures with hands and fingers, moving them all over the tabletop. An excellent extension activity for older children is to use grout scrapers and combs to make patterns in the paint. Patterns can be made by scraping in straight lines or swirling movements. CLEANING UP Have a large dish of warm, soapy water at the ready for paint-soaked hands. Remove aprons as soon as painting is finished to avoid getting paint on clothing. Some children may be reluctant to use fingerpaint. They may prefer to use a roller to spread the paint and a cautious fingertip to paint patterns. Emphasise that fingerpainting isn’t dirty.
