The death of Australian cricket legend Shane Warne was a shock to everyone, but his former fiancé Elizabeth Hurley believed the news of his passing was a joke.
Shane passed away in Thailand in March 2022 following a heart attack and upon hearing the news, the British actress hoped it was a hoax.
“It was very hard and it still is very hard,” she told The Times.
“Losing Shane was terrible. It’s taken a long time to sink in. I honestly kept thinking he’d call and it would turn out to be some big Aussie joke.”
His death undoubtedly shocked everyone he knew as even his ex-wife Simone Callahan revealed in an interview with The Herald Sun in December 2022 that the grief was “still fresh and it’s fluid. It never goes away.”
Simone and Shane remained friends despite their divorce in 2005, and so did Elizabeth and Shane.
The pair met at the races in July 2010 and when pictures surfaced of them kissing in London not long after, fans were surprised to see an Australian sporting legend in love with a British actress.
Shane and Elizabeth’s relationship was fast-tracked when they got engaged not long after in 2011. Sadly, their romance fizzled in 2013 when they broke off their engagement.
However, Shane told The Mirror that their separation caused no animosity between them, but rather they grew apart.
“It wasn’t something that she or I did wrong, it just fizzled out. We’re still great friends, we still stay in touch, we’re good for each other, and our kids get along great,” Shane told The Mirror.
He further revealed his years with Elizabeth “were the happiest of (his) life.”
Elizabeth clearly felt the same as she’s previously confesses Shane was one of the “four greatest loves” of her life!
“I always say to the other two, you’d better watch your backs,” she joked to The Times.
