Just weeks after her own lavish wedding, Sunrise presenter Edwina Bartholomew has landed the role of a lifetime – she’s off to London for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s big day.
And as the 34-year-old prepares to cover the biggest wedding of the year, she knows the royal couple won’t face any of the “unique issues” she did when she tied the knot.
Last month, Edwina wed Neil Varcoe in front of 160 of their family and friends. They were married on their property near the town of Lithgow, west of Sydney.
Despite sharing many happy snaps on social media, Edwina says not everything went to plan.
They lost power on the day, and the generator ran out of diesel too.
“The showers went out in the morning, and the lights went out at night,” Edwina tells TV WEEK.
“We had to duck over to our neighbours’ house and get more [diesel], and some people from town had to bring in some more from the servo in a couple of jerry cans.
“Then, when the generator fired back up, the band fired back up, and we were on again!”
Because of the property’s distance from any shops, Edwina says she was also worried about running out of alcohol – and loo paper!
“Certainly, at Windsor Castle [where Harry and Meghan will tie the knot], they have sorted enough loo paper – and diesel for the generator, I hope,” she laughs.
Edwina and Neil chose not to sell their wedding photos, so the only members of the media there were their friends, including Sunrise host Samantha Armytage.
Obviously, things will be very different for Harry and Meghan on May 19. With the world’s media focused on the couple, Edwina has some advice for them.
“It would be wonderful if they can take a tiny moment together that’s just for them,” she says.
“In a day of chaos and attention, I hope they get that.”
Edwina is “beyond excited” to be in on the action at the Royal wedding. She’ll be a lot closer than she was to the last one.
“When Kate and Wills [Kate Middleton and Prince William] got married [in 2011], I had a party at my house and wore a shirt made out of a Kate Middleton tea towel,” she laughs. “That’s the level of my devotion to the Royal family.”
