Eyewitness Dominic Patten, a senior editor at Deadline, said the man told him he wanted to auction the star and raise money on behalf of the nearly dozen women who have accused the Republican nominee of sexual assault or sexual harassment.

The police have no immediate information on a suspect, although he identified himself to Deadline as ‘Jamie Otis’.

In a video posted by entertainment site TMZ, Mr Otis said, “I think it’s a symbol for all of us who are against sexual assault, and I don’t think Mr Trump deserves that star any longer.

Trump’s star has since been fixed.

“I have an attorney and I’m sure I will turn myself in shortly. However until then I’d like to reach out to as many people as I can to put a spotlight on sexual violence in this country,” Mr Otis concluded.

In recent months, 11 women have claimed that Trump sexually assaulted or harassed them.

At a a rally this week, the POTUS nominee told supporters that the claims were false, and that he would sue the accusers after the November 8th election.

Meanwhile Officer Norma Eisenman, who is a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department, revealed the incident had been reported to officials at around 6am.

Following the call, police erected a tent over the star and began work on repairing it.

Trump was given the star in 2007 in recognition of his role as host of The Apprentice. However, this is not the first time the symbols has been defaced.

In January this year, a reverse swastika was spray-painted over, and a mute sign painted over it in June.

Later in the summer, an L.A. artist erected a small razor-wire-topped wall around the star, a knock on Trump’s plans to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Trump was given the star in 2007.
