At 37-years-old Delta Goodrem has already solidified her status as an Australian icon, and considering her career traverses two decades, we have shared many of her highs and lows.
The blonde beauty made her first television appearances in commercials for companies like Nesquick and Optus. In 1993 she landed her first proper role on A Country Practice, and soon after, she played a bright schoolgirl on Hey Dad…!
Of course, while Delta has enjoyed an acting career, her real love is music, and to break into the tough industry, she sent a five-song long demo CD to music producer Glenn Wheatley in 1999.
Glenn was impressed by her work, and she signed an artist development deal with Empire Records.
The following year she released her first single, I Don’t Care. It wasn’t a hit, but success followed in 2002 when Delta landed a part as Nina Tucker on Neighbours.
“There’s a lot of graduates that I’m proud to say I was part of the Neighbours group no matter what era we’re all in – there’s a secret society!” she joked on the soap’s 30th birthday reunion special.
Delta was a certified star by 2003 when she dropped her first album, Innocent Eyes – the highest-selling Australian album in the 2000s and she even won an Aria for her smash hit Born To Try.
Unfortunately, her Hodgkin’s Lymphoma diagnosis followed her major success. Once Delta went into remission, she opened up to OK Magazine about that time in her life.
“It’s weird to see pictures of that time. No-one saw me on the days I was really sick,” she explained.
“I was 18 when I was diagnosed, and I had a number one album and single in the country. And in the UK, I was number two. It was such a bipolar year.”
In more recent years, Delta starred as a coach on The Voice Australia and even portrayed her idol Olivia Newton-John in the biopic, Hopelessly Devoted To You.
During the pandemic when many musicians found themselves unable to perform in concerts, she also established the Bunkerdown Sessions with boyfriend Matthew Copley and raised the spirits of countless Aussies in lockdown.
Delta marked 2022 with the well-deserved honour of receiving an Order of Australia AM.
She penned a gracious message dedicated to her fans and Australia for their endless support and love to mark the incredible achievement.
“I am deeply humbled to receive an Order of Australia AM honour and reflect today with so much gratitude. From being taken into your hearts and homes as a teenager and the incredible connection and exchange of love I feel from people that I hold in my heart,” she began.
“At my core, I believe in the power of kindness and my intention has always been to give back and to make a difference.”
Delta also detailed how music and her organisation, the Delta Goodrem Foundation, continue to motivate her to work with her signature unbridled passion.
“I continue to be inspired through my music and the @deltagoodremfoundation that serves to touch lives and inspire hearts as a force for good.
“I am a deeply proud Australian and this honour means the world to me.❤️🐨🦘Through the many chapters and eras we all continue to share together the best is yet to come. It’s an honour. xx D,” she concluded.
