Enlisting the help of the 70-year-old actress, Budweiser has once again delivered a moving and timely ad just in time for the Super Bowl.
While most years they focus on making you smile with tear-jerking commercials featuring puppies or horses or both, this year the American brewery is delivering the feels with a much more serious message.
The now-viral commercial, aptly titled Simply Put and promoted as part of the beer distributor’s #GiveADamn campaign, is a call to stop drunk drivers on the night of America’s biggest sporting event of the year.
“Hello,” the Oscar winner begins as she sits in a dimly lit booth of some fine-dining establishment. “I’m Helen Mirren, a notoriously frank and uncensored British lady.”
Relaxing in her luxe red leather boot, Helen looks ready to dive in to a cheeseburger, french fries, and cold bottle of Budweiser.
“The collective We are dumbfounded that people still drive drunk. So, I’ll sum it up like this: If you drive drunk, you, simply put, are a short-sighted, utterly useless, oxygen-wasting, human form of pollution, a Darwin award-deserving selfish coward,” she quips without any hesitation.
“If your brain was donated to science, science would return it. So stop it.”
Showing off her good humour she added, “Now, the chances are you’re a fun, solid, respectable human being. Don’t be a pillock. Your friends and family thank you.”
The beer company explained to Us Weekly why they thought Helen would be the ideal person to deliver their message.
“To spark conversations about this vital issue on one of the biggest drinking occasions of the year, the brand has called upon actress Helen Mirren, with her mix of gravitas and charm, to demand that beer drinkers make a plan to get home safely,” they explained.
One thing is certain, this Dame gives a damn.
