Former Australian Idol star Cosima DeVito reveals how after ten years of being single, she finally gave up waiting for the man of her dreams and was ready to have a baby on her own.
It was then only days after making an appointment at the IVF clinic, to fulfil her dreams of having children, that Cosima met the man she’d been waiting for!
Cosima says that after finally deciding to take matters into her own hands, and taking the steps to use a sperm donor, she instantly felt a flood of relief.
“It was as if all the pressure of dating was gone,” says Cosima. “It was like I could relax and enjoy myself without thinking, ‘Could this last? Will this person want kids? Do I want kids with them?’
“It sounds crazy but I guess it was always on my mind and that interfered with everything.”
It was a sunny May afternoon in inner-city Sydney when Cosima, 38, was introduced to Gus De Romanis, 49, through mutual friends.
When Cosima received a phone call just a few minutes later from Gus asking if she was free for a date, she couldn’t wipe the smile from her face.
“He asked me, ‘Are you free Thursday or Saturday?’” she recalls. “I said, ‘Both’, and he says, ‘Well, I’ll take you out on both then.’?”
While romance was blossoming with Gus though, Cosima knew she couldn’t give up on her dream of starting a family. But with all of her IVF test results in and her insemination booked for January 2015, she knew she needed to be honest with Gus.
“I told him two things on our first date,” she reveals. “I said I loved music and that would never change. And then I said I was considering having a baby on my own.
“He looked at me and said, ‘Well, you don’t have to do it on your own now because you have me.’?”
Within weeks the two were inseparable. Gus even met Cosima’s parents when they visited from Perth just a month into the relationship.
It was then in her grandparents’ home, surrounded by her relatives, that Gus dropped to one knee, telling the whole family he’d fallen madly in love with Cosima and asked her to marry him.
“Mum was crying, I was crying and everybody else was crying!”
Not wanting to waste any more time, the happy couple are making plans for their future and are hoping to get married in April next year.
Cosima – currently working on her album Pieces Of Me, set for release next month – is only too aware things are moving very quickly with Gus.

“And he treats me like a princess. What more could a girl want?”
