Cheekily borrowing the line from Gwyneth Paltrow, who was widely ridiculed for using the term “consciously uncouple” to explain her separation from Chris Martin, Colin Firth has used it to explain why he pulled out of voicing Paddington Bear in an upcoming animated film.

“After a period of denial, we’ve chosen ‘conscious uncoupling’,” he said in a press release.

“It’s bittersweet to see this delightful creature take shape and come to the sad realisation that he simply doesn’t have my voice.

“I’ve had the joy of seeing most of the film and it’s going to be quite wonderful. I still feel rather protective of this bear and I’m pestering them all with suggestions for finding a voice worthy of him.”

After the reaction to her use of the term ‘conscious uncoupling’, Gwyneth Paltrow took to her blog to explain what it meant. The Oscar-winning actress included an explanation of the term from Dr Habib Sadeghi and Dr Sherry Sami, Los Angeles-based physicians who specialise in integrative health.

“Conscious uncoupling”, they say, “is the ability to understand that every irritation and argument was a signal to look inside ourselves and identify a negative internal object that needed healing.”

“If we can recognize that our partners in our intimate relationships are our teachers, helping us evolve our internal, spiritual support structure, we can avoid the drama of divorce and experience what we call a conscious uncoupling.”

Either Colin Firth recognises that his intimate relationship with Paddington Bear helped him evolve his internal, spiritual support structure, or he’s being facetious!
