In an interview for their new film Avengers: Age of Ultron with Digital Spy, the actors were asked about the relationship status of the movie’s only female lead, Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson.
“She’s a s**t,” quipped Jermey Renner before co-star Chris Evans erupted in laughter.
Once recovered from his laughing fitChris, who plays Captain America in the blockbuster, weighed in.
“I was going to say something along that line,” he explained.
The award-winning actor then settled the score by adding: “She’s a complete w***e”.
Social media has erupted over the comments with many criticising the stars for their offensive remarks.
But some fans stood by the Hollywood hunks, insisting that their words were not meant to be taken too seriously.
The superhero duo made separate statements apologising for their tasteless comments.
“Yesterday we were asked about the rumors that Black Widow wanted to be in a relationship with both Hawkeye and Captain America,” 33-year-old Chris said.
“We answered in a juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologise,” he continued.
Jeremy Renner, who plays Hawkeye, told Entertainment Tonight: “It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour.”
