The Nanny reunion news that broke our hearts

Yep, you’ll need the tissues at the ready for this…
Charles Shaughnessy and Fran Drescher

Shhh, do you hear that? It’s the sound of Charles Shaughnessy killing our dreams.

Best known for playing Maxwell Sheffield in the iconic ’90s TV series The Nanny, the actor has totally poo-pooed a rumoured comeback for the sitcom.

“There’s been talk about a stage musical. There’s been talk about a revival series. There’s been talk about a one-off limited show, like a Gilmore Girls-type thing,” he told Radar Online this week.

We’d love to see Mr Sheffield and Fran Fine on the small screen again.

Given that the show was boasting over 23 million viewers back in the day, fans would undoubtedly have embraced a comeback in any form. Anything to hear that sassy banter and Fran Dresher screaming for Mr Sheffield in her thick New York accent one more time, right?

But dashing our hopes of ever hearing that lovable nasally voice again, Charles was quick to point out a very real problem why a revival wouldn’t work…

“The whole concept of The Nanny is a nanny to these three kids. When those three kids are all grown up, there is no need for a nanny,” he told the website.

“Other than getting a bunch of the same actors 20 years later and 20 years older together again, I don’t know how it would work.”

Fineeeee, you have a point Charles.

The hilarious sitcom was a smash hit back in the ’90s.

But while a reunion might not be in the works, the cast continue to be tight-knit.

Last year, we glimpsed a brief reunion on Charles’ Facebook page, where happy snaps show them all celebrating at Fran’s house for her on-screen mother Renée Taylor’s 83rd birthday.

Guess that’s all the warm and fuzzy feels we’ll be getting for now.
