It was 1933 when the nation’s first newspaper for women was born, and to start celebrations The Weekly has put together a souvenir edition celebrating 80 memorable years.

The magazine was an overnight success and became a trailblazer in the world of Australian publishing with its unique balance of cooking, news, current affairs, fashion, beauty, and celebrities that has struck a chord with Australian women making it the number one magazine 80 years later.

Delving into the archives from the past 80 years, the 132-page souvenir edition showcases the rich history of The Weekly.

From reporting the shocking trend of women wearing trousers in the 1930s — “People believe that the trousers for women craze will catch on here as it has done in the US” — to championing women’s rights, sending female war reporters into the field and debating the sexual revolution exploding in every household in the country, the stories are captivating.

It’s a compelling snapshot of Australia evolving including coverage of every major news story and celebrity and culminating in the 2000s with our first female prime minister and very own royal princess.

The 80th Birthday souvenir edition is just the start of The Weekly’s celebrations which will culminate in the October birthday issue. In celebrating our past the magazine will be a launchpad to the future with exciting initiatives to be announced in the May issue (on sale April 24).

The Australian Women’s Weekly: Celebrating 80 memorable years, is on sale Monday April 15.
