In an Interview with Variety Cate Blanchett admitted to having past relationships with women.
The Sydney-based actress was promoting her new film Carol where she plays a New Yorker who in 1952 embarks on a passionate love affair with another woman.
In the Interview Cate was asked whether this was her first turn as a lesbian, she responded coyly, “On film or in real life?”
When pushed for further comment about ever having a relationship with a woman the Blue Jasmine star said, “Yes, many times.”
Much like the character she plays in her new film, the actress doesn’t rely on labels for sexual orientation, “I never really thought about it,” she explains.
Notoriously private, the style icon didn’t offer any other details.
The 45-year-old divulged that she read a lot of “girl on girl books from the period” to prepare for her new role.
In what turned out to be a revealing interview, the actress told the magazine that she’ll never join Twitter and refuses to Google herself.
“I’d end up in rehab! That stuff is addictive,” she joked before adding: “We need to get into people’s private lives now, if they’re hiding something, they’re dishonest.”
The only way she finds out about the scandalous headlines written about her is via the crossing guard at her kid’s school, who’ll often tell her, “what they said about you – that was terrible!”
Never before has Cate hinted that she may be interested in the same-sex and is happily married to playwright Andrew Upton.
The couple have three biological children together, Roman, Ignatius and Dashiel. In March this year they confirmed the adoption of their latest addition, Edith.
Carol will premiere at Cannes Film Festival May 17th.
