The Australian beauty beat Sandra Bullock, Judi Dench, Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet to win the motion picture drama category for her role as an unravelling socialite in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine
Cate, 44, was also victorious on the red carpet, where her stunning black lace backless Armani Prive gown saw her unanimously voted best-dressed.
Leonardo DiCaprio – who has famously been ignored by most of the big awards ceremony – was also a big winner on the night, taking home the best actor in a motion picture musical or comedy category for his role in Wolf of Wall Street.
Matthew McConaughey won the best actor in a motion picture drama prize for Dallas Buyers Club, while the best actress in a motion picture musical or comedy went to Amy Adams for American Hustle.
Jennifer Lawrence, Jared Leto, Robyn Wright, Amy Poehler and Michael Douglas also took home major prizes at the star-studded event.
