The talented Cate Blanchett has been nominated for a Golden Globe for her portrayal of an older, married woman who engages in a lesbian affair with a young shop assistant, in the movie Carol.
The nomination puts Cate on track to becoming one of the greatest actors of her generation.
She already has two Oscars, and only two women – Meryl Streep (who has three) and Katharine Hepburn (who won four) have more than that.
Cate also has three Golden Globes, for Elizabeth, Blue Jasmine, and for her portrayal of a young Bob Dylan in I’m Not There.
Cate is a graduate of the Australian film school, NIDA. She intends to move to the US this year.
She was joined on the list of nominees for the Golden Globes by the great George Miller, who got a nod in the Best Director category for Mad Max: Fury Road.
The sublime Ben Mendelsohn is also on the list, for his portrayal of a troubled son in the series drama, Bloodline.
Also on the list of nominees: Leonardo DiCaprio, whose movie, The Revenant, isn’t yet out. Early reports suggested that Leo gets raped by a bear in the film, but that’s not true. He does, however, sleep inside the carcass of a dead horse.
Leo has won a couple of Globes, but never the Oscar, which is curious, because he’s been brilliant in films like Django, and Gangs of New York, and arguably even in The Great Gatsby.
Others on the list of Globes nominees include Lady Gaga, who appears in American Horror Story and – more than four decades after he first burst onto screens – Sylvester Stallone, who received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Creed.
But Carol leads the charge, with five nominations.
The Globes will be held on January 10, with Ricky Gervais as host.
