The 56-year-old actress makes her return to the role that catapulted her to fame at age 20.

When asked about the question of her iconic character’s age after her sci-fi debut in 1977, Fisher joked she would be “elderly”.

“She’s in an intergalactic old folks home,” she told Palm Beach Illustrated.

The actress joked about her characters signature look, anticipating an elderly Leia would be reluctant to have a makeover.

“The bagel buns and the bikini, because probably she has sundowners syndrome,” she quipped when asked what Leia would be wearing.

“At sundown, she thinks that she’s 20-something. And she puts it on and gets institutionalised.

“I just think she would be just like she was before, only slower and less inclined to be up for the big battle.”

Anticipation is building around Episode VII in the series currently slated for a 2015 released and the force, or cast, appears to be growing stronger.

Fisher joins former on-screen flame Harrison Ford who has announced he will also appear as an older Han Solo.

Mark Hamill, the actor who played a young Luke Skywalker told Entertainment Tonight he hasn’t been approached to feature in the new film, but would be keen to get the crew back together.

“I’m assuming because, I haven’t talked to the writers, that these movies would be about our offspring — like my character would be sort of in the Obi-Wan range, and influential character.

“When I found out that the ultimate good news/bad news joke — the good news is there’s a real attractive, hot girl in the universe; the bad news is she’s your sister — I thought, ‘Well, I’m going to wind up like Sir Alec. I’m going to be a lonely old hermit living out in some kind of desert igloo with a couple of robots’,” he said.

“Another thing I’d want to make sure of is are we going to have the whole gang back? Is Carrie and Harrison and Billy Dee and Tony Daniels, everybody that’s around from the original? I want to make sure that everybody’s on board here, rather than just one.”
