Callan and Rodger: Rush to success

Two of our favourite Aussie actors are back for this year’s hottest drama…

By Angela Mollard

With their chiselled jaws, intense eyes and amazing talent, Rodger Corser and Callan Mulvey have become two of the hottest boys on television. They met on gangland drama Underbelly, and the “cop” and “crim” became great mates. In a treat for audiences, they’re together again on our screens, in Ten’s new police drama Rush.

For Rodger, who earned widespread praise for his role as Detective Steve Owen in Underbelly, the challenge has been to play two policemen in a row and make them different. For Callan, the switch was from playing criminal Mark Moran to a cop who sees everything as black or white. Here the pair talk about road trips, getting in shape, and why they won’t be moving to Hollywood just yet.

This is the second long-stint in Melbourne for you both. We hear you travelled down together?

Rodger: We came in tandem, but I was driving an old ’66 Falcon and Callan’s car is a lot faster and more comfortable than mine. We had to get to Melbourne for a radio interview — we made it with 15 minutes to spare.

Did you know each other before Underbelly?

Rodger: I’d seen Callan on Home And Away and his work really stood out.

Callan: [Laughing] I’d seen Dodge on a few things like the Hyundai adverts.

Rodger: [Indignant] That was some of my best work. Seriously though, working on Underbelly was like working on two different shows — the good guys show and the bad guys show. We hardly ever filmed together, although we might be in the same vicinity during a scene. At the launch of the show we hung out a few times and got on really well.

For the full interview, see this week’s issue of Woman’s Day (on sale September 8).

Rush screens on Network Ten on Tuesdays at 9.30pm.
