Stand-up comedian, writer and actor Cal Wilson passed away on October 11, 2023, at only 53 years old.
Her management, Token Artists confirmed the news of her peaceful passing in a statement. Cal passed from a “short illness” at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, surrounded by friends and family.
“Cal’s generosity, talent and friendship have been constants in the Australian comedy scene for the last twenty years. Cal was loved by her family, friends, fans and peers and a huge hole has been torn in the heart of our community,” the statement read.
“Cal is survived by her Husband Chris and son Digby. The family are asking for privacy at this time.”
Following her surprise passing, those who had the pleasure to know and work alongside Cal commented on the announcement post shared to Cal’s Instagram account, to tribute their departed friend.
The Block judge Shaynna Blaze commented: “I can’t even comprehend this right now. The most divine, radiant person who I have watched, admired and worked alongside. This is heartbreaking. So much love to her husband, son and family. This is a very very sad day.”
2022 Australian of the Year Dylan Alcott described the loss as “absolutely devastating.”
“Cal you are such a beautiful person who always had time for everyone. Was always a pleasure anytime i got to work next to you xx,” he wrote.
MasterChef star Poh Ling Yeow sent all her “love and strength” to Cal’s husband and son, writing: “Call wherever you are I hope you’re frolicking through an infinite supply of hot glue guns & sea of whacky, sparky, rainbow coloured things. It’s been nothing short of magical to be your friend.”
In 2022, Cal was a contestant on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! Australia where she met co-host Julia Morris. The television personality took to Instagram to share her own tribute post.
“I am absolutely heartbroken by the news of the passing of the magnificent Cal Wilson. My deepest sympathies with Chris, Digby & the whole family. We share the deep loss of Cal’s shining light. Vale an all time favourite and proper brilliant babe Jx,” she said.
Meanwhile, Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes tributed her ability to light up “every room she entered,” her talent and generosity.
