Police are examining what role, if any, was played by paparazzi tailing Jenner, who is in the process of transitioning from male to female.
Bruce Jenner was not using his mobile phone, despite reports. The object he was pictured holding while driving was a cigarette and not a mobile phone.
Bruce was married to Kim’s mother until 2013. He is a former Olympic gold medalist.
The accident occurred on the highway out of Malibu. It is believed that Bruce’s car was one of several involved in the pile-up. One car was pushed into oncoming traffic. The driver of that car, a 70-year-old woman, died at the scene.
The website TMZ showed photographs of Bruce, hair in a high ponytail, walking around the mangled vehicles.
A police spokesman has said that Bruce was not being chased by paparazzi, nor trying to escape them, but was aware that photographers were following him in the traffic.
Bruce’s transformation, at age 65, will be the subject of a new reality series. He has the support of his family.
