Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie stop traffic at Unbroken premier in Sydney

Downtown Sydney was in the grip of Brangelina mania tonight as two of Hollywood's biggest stars hit town.
Angelina Jolie, Melody Ishihara, Miyavi Ishihara and Brad Pitt.

Angelina Jolie and her husband Brad Pitt stopped traffic as they took to the red carpet for the world premiere of Jolie’s new film, Unbroken.

Dressed with her trademark elegance in Gucci, Jolie sent the two thousand-strong crowd of star spotters into a screaming frenzy as she wandered up and down Market St, outside the State Theatre.

Both she and Brad spent at least an hour greeting fans, stoically taking selfies with almost every phone and tablet proffered.

Playing his supporting-husband role to a tee, Brad wandered freely among the crowd, shaking hands and signing autographs.

Unbroken brings to the screen the remarkable life story of American Olympian and World War II hero, the late Louis Zamperini.

Zamperini passed away in July at the age of 97, before completion of his biopic.

When reminded during a red-carpet interview tonight of a quote from Louis about the faith he had in her to bring his life story to the silver screen, Jolie became visibly emotional.

“Louis is a reminder to all of us that I each one of us is someone exceptional and it’s all about what we stand for,” she said through tears.

Also walking the red carpet was Megan Gale, as well as stars of the film Jack O’Connell and Japanese pop star, Miyavi.

And in keeping with the spirit of the film, a string of “inspirational guests” also made an appearance, including burns survivor Turia Pitt and breast and ovarian cancer campaigner, Krystal Barter.

Based on the best selling book of the same name by Lauren Hillenbrand, Unbroken chronicles Zamperini’s story if survival – from the 47 days spent adrift on the Pacific Ocean to his two brutal years as a Japanese prisoner of war.

The film was shot almost entirely in Australia – in locations as far afield as Werri Creek, the Great Barrier Reef and Cockatoo Island on Sydney Harbour.

Unbroken opens in Australian cinemas on January 15.
