The 31-year-old fell pregnant to husband Jay-Z several years before the pair welcomed their daughter Blue Ivy.

“About two years ago, I was pregnant for the first time,” Beyonce reveals in her new documentary Life Is But a Dream.

“I heard the heartbeat, which was the most beautiful music I ever heard in my life. I picked out names.

“I envisioned what my child would look like. I was feeling very maternal.”

But in the early stages of her pregnancy she sadly lost the baby.

“I flew back to New York to get my check up-and no heartbeat,” she said.

“Literally the week before I went to the doctor, everything was fine, but there was no heartbeat.”

The singer turned to music to help her through her pain, writing the first song on her album about her experience.

“It was the best form of therapy for me, because it was the saddest thing I’ve ever been through,” she said.

Jay-Z also turned to music, making reference to the miscarriage in his track Glory.

When Beyonce did fall pregnant again she said it was “very much like falling in love”.

“You are so open. You are so overjoyed,” she said.

“There are no words that can express having a baby growing inside of you, so of course you want to scream it out and tell everyone.”

The documentary aims to show Beyonce in a more natural light, with the star opening up about her life out of the spotlight.

“People see celebrities and they have money and fame, but I’m a human being,” she says in the documentary.

“I cry, I get scared, I get nervous just like everyone else.”
