Nicole Kidman took home her first Emmy win after three nominations for her convincing portrayal of a woman hiding an abusive relationship on Big Little Lies.

She started her thank you speech by telling fellow nominee Reese Witherspoon, โ€œReese I share this with youโ€.

Her thank yous extended to fellow cast members and Liane Moriarty for โ€œentrusting us with her bookโ€, but it was her dedication to husband Keith and her daughters that had the room welling up.

โ€œIโ€™m also a wife and a mother to my Sunny and Faith,โ€ she said, thanking them for their support while she filmed the series through tears.

โ€œI want my little girls to have this on their shelf so they can say, โ€˜every time my mama didnโ€™t put me to bed it was because of this, so at least I got something.โ€

She also thanked the academy for awarding a role about domestic violence.

โ€œSometimes we get to do something bigger, and we shone a light on domestic abuse,โ€ she said.

โ€œBy you acknowledging me with this award you are shining a light on it even more so thank you, thank you, thank you, I bow down to you.โ€

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Best Actress โ€“ Comedy

Meanwhile, Julia Louis-Dreyfus took home the gold status for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, surprising absolutely nobody.

As much as I would love to claim the Nostradamus title for predicting her win, it was inevitable. Even before this year, the Seinfeld alum had already received the most nominations of any actress in Emmys history as well as the most wins of any actress in Emmys history.

Next season will be Veepโ€™s last, so looks like 2019 will be the year any other comedic leading actress will get a look in.

The star revealed the show had binned a story line for impeachment because โ€œwe were worried someone else might get to it first.โ€

She walked offstage but didnโ€™t make it very far, joining her cast mates to celebrate Veep winning Best Comedy.

The win for the show seemed to be a cherry on top, with showrunner David Mandel saying: โ€œI was honestly just happy she won.โ€

He went on to thank the other comedy shows for their inspiration, slyly adding in โ€œThe Trump Administration and his family,โ€ because honestly, it would be rude to not acknowledge the amount of story lines they inspire on the show.

Elisabeth Moss, Best Actress โ€“ Drama

The actress finally took home an Emmy for her restrained simmering and anguished portrayal of Offred after seven nominations for her work on Mad Men and Top of the Lake.

โ€œTo my mother, you are brave and strong and smart and taught me that you can be kind,โ€ she said before the audio cut off. We donโ€™t want to spread rumours, but it looked like she followed it with โ€œand a f-ing badassโ€.

Like Julia, she didnโ€™t make it far before coming back on stage to celebrate The Handmaidโ€™s Tale winning the coveted Best Drama Series.

Margaret Atwood, the author of the novel on which the series is based, joined the cast and crew on stage as they accepted the award โ€“ one of 13 they were nominated for.

โ€œWeโ€™d like to thank Margaret Atwood for creating this world for all of us,โ€ showrunner Bruce Miller said.

โ€œYou guys supported us when we wanted to terrible things to Rory Gilmore.โ€

Once he received the wrap up, he finished with a call to action.

โ€œGo home, get to work โ€“ we have a lot of things to fight for.โ€
