At 70 and as a mother of a family whose ups and downs have played out in front of the eyes of Australia, Patti Newton knows a thing or two about life.
And now, the woman who’s been married to Bert Newton for more than 40 years has candidly revealed that they’ve stayed together through living apart.
“I think we have a great relationship because we’re not always in each other’s pocket,” she says.
Bert, 73, is touring nationally in the theater production of The Rocky Horror Show, and Patti couldn’t be happier to remain at home in Melbourne – after all, with young grandchildren, she has more than enough to keep herself busy.
“He can go off and do a little bit of work here and there, and when he comes back there are three grandchildren at home,” says Patti. “He’ll probably die working. He’ll die happy. He loves it. He’d never be any good at retiring and he’d drive me mad being at home all the time. “
And when Bert does clear his schedule to relax at home, Patti rules the roost.
“I look after him, make sure he eats properly, which he doesn’t do, which is better than when he’s on his own,” she says.
