In the lead up to Australia day, it’s time to celebrate the Aussie stars who’ve done us proud internationally – there’s certainly no shortage of them!

The great thing about seeing kids from the bush turn into international superstars is that it inspires the next generation of Aussies to know that they too can acheive anything they put their minds to.

While we are proud to see our own doing well on an international platform, it’s even more humbling to see them keep the down-to-earth attitude we’re famous for, even when taking home Golden Globes. We’re looking at you, Cate Blanchett!

Another boy from Neighbours, Guy Pearce rose to international fame in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and these days is known for star turns in blockbusters like The King’s Speech and Prometheus.

Hugo Weaving of course starred in Priscilla too and since then has starred in smash-hits like The Matrix and V for Vendetta.

Melissa George got her start in Summer Bay – just don’t remind her of that. These days she stars in international TV shows such as Hunted and The Good Wife.

Another Home and Away alumni, Ryan Kwanten is best known these days for his hunky role in Vampire TV Show True Blood and has been announced to play Charles Manson in the upcoming, yet-to-be-titled biopic about the serial killer.

Since leaping to superstardom over 20 years ago in Muriel’s Wedding, Toni Collette has picked up multiple awards in Australia and internationally for roles in About a Boy, Little Miss Sunshine and most recently for her starring role in US TV series United States of Tara.

Portia De Rossi is more American these days than Aussie as she’s settled in LA and married to TV megastar Ellen DeGeneres but we’ll still claim her as ours for her wicked sense of humour in comedic roles such as Arrested Development.

Another Muriel’s Wedding star, these days Rachel Griffiths is best known for her roles on US television with roles in Six Feet Under and Brother and Sisters earning her a Golden Globe and two SAG Awards.

The Aussie boy Simon Baker is now known for stealing hearts internationally with roles in The Guardian and The Mentalist.

Of course, no list of international Aussie superstars would be complete without mentioning Dame Edna Everage who’s been going strong for 60 years and is as close as Australia gets to actual royalty!
