Angelina Jolie has met with none other than the head of the catholic church, Pope Francis, in Rome on a trip to Italy with her children.
Angelina, 39, met with the Pope in a private audience at the Vatican this week after a special screening of her latest filmUnbrokenat the headquarters of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences.
Ange reportedly kissed the Pope’s ring and received a rosary blessing from him.
Unbroken, which was directed by Angelina and premiered in Sydney last year follows the story of Olympian and WWII prisoner of war Louis Zamperini, who was a devout Christian. Pope Francis was reportedly already well aware of his tale of survival and devotion, which is why he invited the Maleficent star to screen the film in Rome.
In insider described the special Vatican screening of the movie to E! Online: “There were some twenty-five people at the event,” the attendee tells us. “It’s a very, very strong film about the suffering of a prisoner of war, and details the persecution he went through and his reaction of pardon and conversion, all rooted in faith.
“It was very well done, and you could tell she was very strongly committed to the film.”
The meeting came after Ange was seen out shopping in Rome with her brother James Haven and daughters Zahara, 9 and tomboy Shiloh, 8 at a toy shop in Rome.
The star has drawn some criticism for choosing to meet with the Pope after reportedly choosing to depict a more “universal” faith in her film rather than the Christian faith that Louis Zamperini aligns with.
Angelina told reporters last year that: “We made it universal, not specific to one faith, and that was something that was agreed upon with Louie,” (via Religion News).
A source has previously revealed though that both Ange and Brad “admire the Pope” and “like the pope’s message” after he famously spoke about homosexuality in 2013, where he said: “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has goodwill, who am I to judge?”
Her meeting with the Pope is not the first time that the Hollywood star has met with a major leader, last year she met with her majesty the Queen who made her an honorary dame for her humanitarian work.
Angelina and Brad last year attended an anti-rape summit alongside George Clooney’s human-rights barrister wife Amal Clooney and Angelina is known for her work as a special envoy to the United Nations.
Now after meeting with the Pope it seems that Ange is one step closer to sainthood!
