Every parent and child have their own rules about how to get along over the holidays, Angelina Jolie and Jon Voight are no different.
โWe donโt talk politics well,โ Angelina has said of her father, who has been outspoken about his conservative views. โWe talk art very well. Weโve found itโs a common language.โ
And they can always bond over their love for her six kids, who range in age from nine to 16. โJon and I have gotten to know each other over [his] grandchildren now,โ Angelina said. โWeโre finding a new relationship, and itโs very, very nice.โ
That hasnโt always been the case. โWeโve had some difficulties,โ Angelina , 42, has acknowledged of the long estrangement she felt from her dad, 78, who split from her late mum, Marcheline, when she was a toddler. โI didnโt feel close to my father. I felt more of my motherโs daughter when I was a child.โ

After Marchelineโs death in 2007, Angelina and Jon grew closer, and their connection strengthened following the actressโ traumatic divorce from Brad Pitt last year.
Jon โhas been very good at understanding they needed their grandfather at this time,โ Angelina said, adding that her dad has joined them for family therapy sessions.
โHe knows the rule โ donโt make them play with you. Just be a cool grandpa whoโs creative and hang out and tell stories and read a book in the library.โ
Jon is more than happy to do just that. โI love to play with my grandchildren,โ he said. โIโm not an armchair grandfather โ Iโm interactive. The happiest sound for me is sitting in my house and hearing children and their laughter.โ

Angelinaโs relationship with her dad Jon Voight strengthened following her very public divorce from Brad Pitt.
Angelinaโs older brother, James Haven, has also mended fences with their father. โIt was really a trifecta, meaning she found peace with him, and I found peace,โ James, 44, told Closer Weekly at the recent Justice Speaks Holiday Benefit Luncheon in Hollywood.
โThis story has come full circle. A big part of it is just coming to that point where you deal with and solve and rectify things. Itโs nice.โ
Itโs also a huge relief for Angelina. The tensions within the family โwere a big deal for decades,โ said James, nothing heโd just gotten off the phone with Jon, who was shooting a film in Kentucky. โItโs a major weight off our shoulders.โ
Now Jon hopes to be directed in a movie by Angelina, who just earned a Golden Globe nomination for her foreign-language film First They Killed My Father.
โI love my daughter, and Iโm very impressed by her directing,โ he said. โIโm crazy about her and my grandchildren.โ
For now, the kids remain Angelinaโs top priority. โVery honestly, Iโve spent the last year and a half doing nothing but just really being a mum, and itโs the most important thing for me to do,โ sheโs said.
โIโll see what projects come, but Iโll see how much I need to balance that with my kids.โ
So, what are the biggest challenges Angelina faces in the year ahead? โTeenagers,โ she said with a laugh. No doubt Jon can relate to that, too!
