Andrew Sachs of Fawlty Towers fame dies, aged 86

The actor's wife has confirmed his passing.

Andrew Sachs, the actor who played the hilarious Manuel in Fawlty Towers has died at the age of 86, his wife has announced.

According to the Telegraph UK, the actor had reportedly been struggling with Alzheimer’s disease since 2012 and passed away in a care home last week, his wife Melody Sachs said.

“My heart has been broken every day for a long time,” she said. Melody had nursed her husband throughout his illness and said he was positive until the end: “I never once heard him grumble.”

Sachs, who was born in Germany, appeared on screen, radio and stage but it was his role as hapless Manuel opposite John Cleese, Prunella Scales and Connie Booth in 1970s series Fawlty Towers that earned him the most notoriety.
